Going Up

Mission: Prelude: Getting The Team Together

Riding the lift as she did every morning, Jennie glanced down at the PADD in her hand and frowned. "That can't be right." As a scientist she was always after fact but this result seemed far from Ocam's razor. That didn't mean it wasn't true, but it seemed very far fetched so she could check the data again. The lift stopped and she walked off, her eyes still downcast until she walked straight into a bulkhead that wasn't supposed to be there. Startled and rubbing the top of her head she turned around to see where she was.

Tiam was a bit lost on the station, but he was ok with that. There was always trouble to be found somewhere. He had piloted the bucket of bolts this new 'super' team was supposed to be using for some missions here or there. He hoped everyone had a will written out because he would be surprised if the thing got them off the station.

As he paused to see where he was, he noticed a young woman run right into the buckled head. He winced.

'That had to hurt', he thought.

Walking over to her he said, "Hey, are you ok? That bulkhead tried to knock you over, I saw it all. I'd be willing to give security a full report."

He smiled at her.

Jennie glanced at him, "What?" She said, not fully grasping the humor of the situation. "Where am I?" He was not one of her scientists. Finally realizing who he was by the uniform she sighed. "I got off on deck 13. Stupid lift, stupid team," she grumbled.

"You ran into the bulkhead", Tiam said. "I'm Tiam. Do you want me to help you to the doctor? You could have a concussion."

"i know I did." Jennie said. "I don't have a concussion, trust me. Though I'm not usually this scatterbrained, I was just a bit too focused on what I was reading. I'm Jennie. And no, no doctor, just a little bump on the head, it will heal."

"I am Tiam", Tiam said. "So, what are you reading that's so good you ran into the bulkhead."

"Oh, scientific experiment although, it's wrong so not really that great. I was trying to figure out why and not watching where I was going, hence the bulkhead slapping me . . . . And we're back to talking about that again. So umm, you're one of those Scorpio members I'm assuming?"

"I guess you could say that", Tiam said with a chuckle. "I was sort of thrown into the mix there. Sort of a unique circumstance shall we say."

"Hmm, you have my sympathies then," Jennie drew her lips in a little bit, almost chewing on one in thought. "Forgive me for saying this, but you don't seem the type."

"I'm not", Tiam replied with a smirk. "Sort of an offer I couldn't refuse sort of situation."

"Blackmail?" Jennie asked, almost hopefully. "I tell you what, I'll buy lunch if you tell me. I might throw in a tour of the labs too if you like."

"I'd love too", Tiam said. "I will warn you though. I wouldn't say this is a 100% blackmail situation. Sort of a rock and hard place situation."

He smiled at her.

"Hmm, well you can tell me all about it, or not, while we walk." She gestured for him to follow her and walked off without waiting for a response. She turned around in the lift to face him. "I love my station, I hate that I had to give up a deck to your team."

Tiam nodded and said, "I can understand somewhat. It's like when parents have a third kid and the middle kid has to move into the older kid's bedroom until the parents can get a new house."

She blinked at him and then cracked a smile. "I wouldn't know, I'm an only child. Alright, maybe I'm being a bit childish. I just don't like people giving me orders."

"I can understand about the whole orders thing", Tiam said. "Sort of rubs me the wrong way too. Sort of makes my skin itch."

"Yet here we both are." Jennie said, watching him. "Let's talk about something else. I have some cool experiments to show you in the lab," she led the way when the lift stopped, it opened onto the main lab area where several people were working. Her office was just off to the right.

Tiam looked around and whistled.

"This place is cool", Tiam said. "What do you all work on here?"

"All kinds of things really but our most exciting project is terraforming. I'm specifically a botanist so anything related to plants gets me really excited."

"Terraforming", Tiam echoed. "That's one thing I am not too familiar with. I'll have to read some of it. So, why a botanist?"

"Hmm, because they are quiet and yet in their own way they are actually very social. They respond to the sounds and the tones of our voices, they rely on us in some instances to keep them flourishing and in return we get to enjoy their beautiful structures." She shrugged, hoping she hadn't gone too far into crazy land for him.

"I have never heard plants described in quite that manner", Tiam replied. "What is your favorite plant?"

"Oh . . . . well to be honest it's an Earth one which seems kind of biased. A Himalayan blue poppy. They're so naturally beautiful it just takes my breath away to watch one grow." Jennie couldn't help but blush a little, she really was being a nerd about plants.

"It must grow pretty fast if you can watch it in process", Tiam remarked. "I must be honest I don't know anything about plants. Give me a computer and I can make it sing, but plants, well, most are pretty to look at."

He smiled at her.

"That's true," she shrugged. "Well you could learn . . . we could plant something and take care of it together for a few weeks, see what happens?"

"Do you have what's needed for a trellian gal berry?", Tiam asked. "When they turn purple they are so good."

"Not the real seeds, but I could replicate them. Will that work for you?" Jennie knew some people were fanatic about having the real plant in front of them but even a replicated seed would grow and produce the same thing.

"Sure, I didn't expect you to pull one out of your ear like magic", Tiam said, smiling. "I am sure the berries will taste just as good. If you smash them up, they go great on toast."

"Deal. I'll get started on it this evening. I should probably get back to work though, fix this experiment gone wrong."

"It was great talking with you, thanks for showing me around", Tiam said. "Whenever I get done, flying people wherever it is they want to go, we'll have to do this again."

He gave her a wave and smile and left, briefly looking back as he did.
